There are so many variations of Puebloan pottery- differences that can be found across Pueblos and of course across artists. The color of clays vary across Pueblos as do the styles used to create each piece.
The Hopi are known for this yellow clay as well as their polychrome pieces. Though they have a style intrinsic to the area, each piece crafted is entirely unique as each piece is lovingly handcrafted and painted using painstaking and ancient techniques.
Ida Susunkewa uses these old-world techniques when crafting her art. She is a highly-skilled artist who creates her pieces using the traditional coil and scrape methods. Ida finds her clay close to her home which is the first mesa Pueblo in Polacca, Arizona. She then processes it by mixing in a mineral or volcanic ash. Each piece is polished with rocks before being painted and fired. This beautiful bowl is painted with traditional geometric designs, motifs and line patterns. It would be a great addition to any Pueblo pottery collection.
